Frequently Asked Questions

Most cases resolve within 30–90 days of filing. Simple, well-documented cases (ATM disputes with clear evidence) often settle at the conciliation stage within weeks. Complex fraud cases take longer.
No. Filing with your bank and with the RBI Ombudsman is completely free. Beware of anyone charging money to "file RBI complaints" — the official portal cms.rbi.org.in is free and simple.
Yes, the bank will know — RBI forwards your complaint to them for a response. But banks cannot legally retaliate against customers for filing legitimate complaints. It's your statutory right. Retaliation itself would be a fresh, serious complaint.
Your actual loss (refund with interest), plus consequential compensation up to the scheme limit (₹30 lakh under the 2026 scheme), plus up to ₹1 lakh for mental agony and harassment in deserving cases. For ATM delay cases, ₹100/day compensation applies beyond the mandated reversal timeline.
No. The process is designed for ordinary customers — plain language complaints with evidence work. Lawyers become useful for consumer commission or court escalation, and for complex fraud/insurance cases.
The ombudsman generally cannot accept complaints filed more than 1 year after the bank's final reply (or 1 year + 30 days if no reply). Your remaining options are the consumer commission (which has its own 2-year limitation) or civil court. Don't wait — file early.
Yes. If the bank resolves your issue after you file (this happens often — RBI attention motivates banks), you can inform the ombudsman that the matter is settled and close the complaint.
No — not for the same matter at the same time. If the issue is already before a court, consumer forum, or arbitration, the ombudsman must reject it. Choose your forum: ombudsman first is usually smarter because it's free and fast, and you can still go to consumer court afterwards if unsatisfied.
Awards are binding on the bank once you accept them. Banks must comply within the stipulated period (typically 30 days). Non-compliance is a serious regulatory matter with RBI — in practice, banks comply.
Yes. Either party can appeal to the RBI Appellate Authority within 30 days of the decision. See our Appeal Guide for the full process.
Yes. The Integrated Ombudsman Scheme covers banks, NBFCs, prepaid payment instruments (wallets), and payment system participants — all through the same cms.rbi.org.in portal.
Insurance complaints go to the Insurance Ombudsman (under IRDAI's framework), not the RBI ombudsman — unless the issue is with a bank mis-selling insurance, which RBI covers. File insurance ombudsman complaints at cioins.co.in after first complaining to the insurer.
Per RBI's limited liability rules: report within 3 working days of learning about the fraud = zero liability (bank bears the loss, if the fault isn't yours). Report in 4–7 days = limited liability. Report immediately — call the bank AND the 1930 cybercrime helpline.
Yes, an authorised representative can file on your behalf with a simple authorisation letter. Useful for senior citizens or NRIs.
Usually no. The entire process is document-based and online. In some cases the ombudsman may hold a hearing (increasingly via video call), but most complaints are decided on documents alone.
